Every Dollar Makes a Difference
Chapter Resources
While a gift of at least $1 per member is an attainable goal, chapter officers are challenged to get 100% of the chapter to participate. To participate, some chapters will need to fundraise. Use the ideas below to get your chapter started making a difference. Submit your ideas or questions to Alumni Relations Coordinator, Courtney Taylor at courtney.taylor@ptk.org.
The number one rule of Every Dollar Makes a Difference: Chapters cannot increase dues or fees for members. Be creative!
Suggestions of Fundraising Activities
- Soda Sacrifice: ask members and friends of your chapter to donate the money that might have been spent at a soda or snack machine. If possible place a donation box nearby.
- Matching Gifts: see if your college’s faculty and/or administration might match your gift to the Hites Scholarship Challenge. For help approaching administrators ask your advisor or Phi Theta Kappa Foundation staff.
- Kiss the Pig: Let chapter members and friends on campus “vote” with money to have someone kiss a pig or something equally outlandish. Be sure to get permission before volunteering anyone to participate!
- Loose change jar/Wishing Well: Collect loose change at meetings, concessions, and any other place where chapter members and friends might have extra change.
- No-No Jar: establish a collection for no-no words such as swear words or “PTK” (instead of Phi Theta Kappa).
- Hits for Hites: host a home-run derby or golf tournament.
- 50/50 Raffle: Raffle off half of the monies raised by selling tickets, using the other half as your gift for Every Dollar Makes a Difference.
- Sell White Roses: use The Society’s flower as a fundraiser at Inductions and Graduations.
- Duct Tape sale: Tape an officer or faculty member to the wall charging $1 per foot. Be sure the taped person is a willing participant!
- Pass the Flamingo: Post a giant flamingo or campus icon in the office of a faculty member and ask that they pay to have it removed.
- Pay it Forward: Ask chapter members and friends to donate at least $1 in honor of anyone they would like to see continue their educations. Students can also make a $1 gift in honor of those who have helped them pursue their education.
- Have a Party: Host a movie night or Wii game night to raise money.
- Wrap Gifts: Wrap gifts during the holidays at a local store. Opportunities to wrap gifts book early, so don’t wait until it’s too late!
- Academic Bowl: Host an academic bowl, using entry fees as a fundraiser.
- Seek Sponsorships: See if college administration, faculty and local businesses might match your induction rate with a gift for each dollar you induct.
- Garage Sale: Have a group garage sale.
- Run/Walk: Host a campus 5K Run/Walk to raise money.
- Throw Something: Plan a pie throw or dunking booth.
- Reserved Parking: Coordinate with campus offices to see if you can raffle off a reserved parking spot on your campus to students and faculty.
- Kidnap the Mascot: Kidnap and ransom a chapter “mascot”. Make sure you have permission first!
- Restaurant Night: Check with local restaurants will donate $1 or more per dinner served on a specific night. If your chapter takes care of the promotion the restaurant would welcome the extra college business.
Your campus and community will likely have rules and regulations about fundraising. Be sure any fundraising project you undertake adhere to these guidelines.
