About our Featured Scholar: Dixie Morgan

In 2017 Dixie Morgan was at a crossroads in her life.

Five years before her father had three major heart attacks and underwent bypass surgery. In 2016 he suffered another heart attack that left him unable to work.

Dixie began working as many hours as she could to provide money for the family. Despite being on the SNAP food stamp program Dixie would often come home from school and work to find there was no food left for dinner. Buying gas for the commute to campus was an additional challenge.

Dixie was a leader in Phi Theta Kappa and the college honors program. She helped organize the campus-wide Community College Completion Corps event and served as a mentor for freshman students. She volunteered at an animal shelter and job shadowed veterinarians in hopes of applying to a veterinary sciences program. But all the financial stress was making her consider dropping out.

That’s when she received the Oberndorf Lifeline to Completion Scholarship that changed everything. Now six years later Dixie has completed college and veterinary school and is working at her dream job.
